The Mastery of Sketch
Artist Creativity

Kayla Griffin was born on August 29th in Sacramento, California. She earned her master’s degrees in Fine Arts, figure painting (2023), and Arts and Communication (2017), respectively. Kayla was never fond of writing; it was not until she married that she began her authorial endeavors because poetry is her husband’s love language. Kayla loves the “cutesy relationship stuff,” so she did what she could to learn how to write for him. On the contrary, Kayla always knew she wanted to be an artist.

Kayla Griffin is an illustrator and author committed to spreading love, hope, and warmth through her creative efforts. Her traditional approach to illustrations sets her apart from the digital mainstream. She provides her clients with hand-drawn and hand-painted illustrations that add depth to her work, which she believes digital alternatives lack. She began book illustrations after a friend asked her to hand-draw for her children’s book (which is coming out sometime soon) and fell in love with the process.

Kayla is also a professional visual artist; her paintings have been shown worldwide. She enjoys poetry and plans to release her new poetry book next year, which revolves around overcoming mental health challenges and finding reasons to live. She has lost many due to suicide and is passionate about helping people overcome that struggle.

Kayla draws on her personal experiences with ADHD, PTSD, and anxiety. She attempted to take her life in 2014 but was saved by a dear friend. She wants others suffering from similar experiences to find a reason to stick around like she did.

Kayla advocates mental health awareness and uses her platform to cultivate empathy and understanding. The author believes in cherishing simplicity and actively engages in illustration commissions for children’s books and other creative projects.

The artist-turned-writer advises other creatives to just keep making. Kayla believes becoming an expert in whatever creative endeavor that calls to you only takes persistence. She still doesn’t think she is where she wants to be as an author or visual artist, but if she doesn’t keep making it, she will never reach her potential.
